Final Grade Calculator
Calculate the exact score you need on your final exam to achieve your target overall class grade.
Final grade formula
The weighted arithmetic formula isolates the minimum final exam score required:
Note: Enter weight as a decimal in calculations (e.g. 25% weight = 0.25).
Target score examples
Securing an A (90%) with an 85% average
You currently hold an 85% average going into a final exam worth 25% of your overall grade.
Holding a B (80%) with an 82% average
You currently have an 82% course grade with a final exam worth 20% of your grade.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate what grade you need on a final exam?
Multiply your current course grade by the portion of the course completed (1 − Final Weight), subtract that from your target grade, and divide by the final exam's weight. Formula: Exam Needed = [Target − Current × (1 − Weight)] ÷ Weight.
What if the required score is higher than 100%?
If the calculated score exceeds 100%, it means your desired letter grade is mathematically impossible without extra credit or a curved grading distribution. Consider calculating the score needed for the next lower grade bracket.
What if the required score is negative or zero?
If the result is zero or less, congratulations! Your existing coursework has accumulated enough points that you are mathematically guaranteed your target grade regardless of your final exam score.
