Split formula

Proportional allocation calculates individual shares based on weight or target percentage:

Share Amount = Total Amount × (Share % ÷ 100)

Hare-Niemeyer largest remainder allocation guarantees the sum of all rounded cents equals 100% of the principal.

Percentage split examples

60 / 40 business partnership profit

Two partners distribute $12,500 in quarterly net profits.

Partner 1 (60%): $12,500 × 0.60 = $7,500.00
Partner 2 (40%): $12,500 × 0.40 = $5,000.00

3-way equal split on $100

Three roommates divide a $100.00 utility invoice evenly without losing cents.

Person 1: $33.34 (largest remainder)
Person 2: $33.33
Person 3: $33.33

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a 60/40 or 70/30 split?

Multiply the total amount by each party's percentage share (e.g. 60% = × 0.60, 40% = × 0.40). For example, splitting $10,000 on a 60/40 basis results in $6,000 and $4,000.

How does the largest-remainder method ensure shares sum exactly to the total?

When allocating rounded currency cents across 3 or more people (e.g., $100 split 3 ways), standard rounding leaves a 1-cent discrepancy ($33.33 × 3 = $99.99). The Hare-Niemeyer largest-remainder method allocates the remaining 1 cent to the party with the largest fractional remainder, guaranteeing exact dollar balancing.

Can I split amounts into unequal custom weights?

Yes. The calculator accepts any positive numeric weights or percentages. The system sums the total weights and calculates each party's proportional share automatically.
