Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate customer retention rate?
Customer Retention Rate (CRR) measures the percentage of starting customers a business keeps over a period, excluding new acquisitions: CRR (%) = [(End Customers − New Customers) ÷ Start Customers] × 100.
How are retention rate and churn rate related?
Customer retention rate and customer churn rate are mathematical inverses for a fixed cohort. Retention Rate (%) + Churn Rate (%) = 100%. For example, an 85% retention rate corresponds directly to a 15% churn rate.
Why must new customers be subtracted from end customers?
If new customers were not subtracted, strong sales growth would mask customer dissatisfaction and cancellations. Subtracting new customers isolates the true loyalty of your starting cohort.
